The powerhouse duo of Janie Rothfield (fiddle and banjo) & Hilarie Burhans (clawhammer banjo) is a force to be reckoned with! They've played together both formally and informally for many years. Their musical chemistry is undeniable, and it has taken them far and wide… touring Australia with the all-woman string band Sugar Pie, teaching and performing at music camps throughout the US and Europe, rocking dance floors as two-thirds of the contradance band Great Big Taters, and just plain tearing it up at festival jams. They decided their musicalsynergy was too much fun not to share with still wider audiences, and the touring duo Janie & Hilarie was born!
Janie Rothfield is a power-house American fiddler, clawhammer banjo and guitar player who is widely recognized for her traditional and inventive style, in the pocket rhythm, whimsical groove and her award-winning original tunes. She is a full time touring musician playing concerts, workshops, music camps, festivals and dances around the world and online. Janie has been performing, recording and teaching music that is rooted in Traditional American Old Time and Celtic Music since her teens, when she started playing with older generation musicians from New England, North Carolina and Quebec. With over 20 recordings to her credit, Janie has traveled the world with her unique brand of traditional based music including the UK, France, Germany, Holland, Australia, Canada and throughout the USA. Janie has played at festivals throughout the US including Old Songs Festival (NY), Folky Fish Fest (MO), Festival of American Fiddle Tunes (WA), Philadelphia Folk Festival (PA), Rotterdam Folk Festival (Netherlands) Falcon Ridge Folk Festival (NY), Brussels Old Time Weekend (Belgium), Old Time In the Alps (Switzerland) and at music camps such as Midwest Banjo Camp (IND), Mandolin and Banjo Camp North (MA), Great Lakes Music Camp (MI), Earful of Fiddle Camp (MI), Fiddle Hell (MA), Friends of American Old Time Music and Dance Weekend (UK), and Janie’s Jumpstart Weekends around the world!
Hilarie Burhans has been playing and teaching her driving clawhammer banjo style for more than 45 years. She’s a co-founder of the nationally-touring Hotpoint Stringband, with whom she has recorded five albums, and she has collaborated on too many other musical projects to count. A track from her solo CD was featured on an episode of the acclaimed HBO series Deadwood. More than 7,000 subscribers enjoy her YouTube banjo channel, and her banjo instructional Patreon has more than 700 paid subscribers. Hilarie has won the Ohio State Banjo Contest nine times, and has won coveted First Place ribbons in both the Traditional Band and NeoTraditional Band contests at the Appalachian String Band Festival, aka Clifftop. During her 20-year stint with Hotpoint, she played for contradance weekends almost every state in the US, and has composed many contradance and waltz tunes. Hilarie loves teaching banjo, and has taught at numerous music camps in the US and Europe. She grew up in Arizona, Wisconsin, Pakistan, Massachusetts, Ethiopia, and then, in 10th grade, moved to the college town Athens in the Appalachian part of Ohio. While she is deeply rooted there, she hasn’t lost her love for travel.
